The sobering story of the missing fisherman in Florida this week brings to our attention a very uncomfortable truth: our obsession with offshore fishing and recreational boating is rife with danger. If you’re like me you love being on the water. We feel at home on the ocean. Being at the helm probably comes as natural as riding a bike or driving a car. It is easy to take for granted that when we go on the water chasing that next great bite or cruising with the family that we will return to the dock safely and soundly without incident. It is clear now more than ever that safe return is never a given. So what do you need to be better prepared when things go bad on the water?

Even as temperatures plunged and many of our sounds and rivers froze over for days the boat market quickly began to heat up as we rang in 2018.
Our fall and early winter was predictably slow with most of us focused on the holidays. However, as I predicted, once Christmas came and went and the big acorn dropped in Raleigh the boat market came back to life. We saw a 225% increase in views on our YachtWorld listings in just the first week of 2018. That was accompanied by our first sale of the year when our 2007 Sea Pro 238 went under contract.
Our phone continues to ring and the email inquiries are filling up the inbox nicely. The market is certainly strong with both buyers and sellers active and ready to move. 2018 promises to be a great year as a strong econ...

If you have ever owned a boat someone has probably told you that old tired line before... "The two best days of owning a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it."
I heard that a few times the day I bought my first boat (a Trophy 1903). I have always hated that line. While partly true, the day I bought my first boat was one of the proudest days of my life, the day I sold that boat was bittersweet, even though I already had the next boat sitting at home.
I would argue there are many days of boat ownership that are better than the days you buy it and sell it. I know its true for me because I've lived them.
Spending the day tubing on the lake with my family and then stopping in a little cove to let my niece catch her first fish. That was a great day....
